Rank Requirements

Shaolin Kempo Karate Belt Ranking System
• Curriculum is the same for all ages.
• Time spent at each rank varies based on age, ability, and attendance.
• Achieving Black Belt takes anywhere from 3-8 years, depending on age, ability, etc.
• There are 11 under black belt ranks. In addition to the ranks shown below, there are advanced levels to the Blue and Green Belts. There are also three levels of Brown Belt.
• Black Belts are ranked by ‘degrees’, represented by stripes on the belt. There are ten degrees of Black Belt.
• Mastery is achieved at 5th degree Black Belt in our system and is signified by red stripes. The 10th degree Black Belt represents the system’s Grand Master – Frederick J. Villari.
Testing for a New Rank

• There is specific curriculum at each rank which must be completed to be eligible for testing.
• When a student demonstrates a high enough degree of proficiency in their material they will receive written notification of their eligibility to test.
• Testing is based on the individual. Students of different ages, abilities, and commitment levels will move at different paces through the ranks.
• Students generally move quickly through the first few ranks, and slow down as they reach the intermediate and advanced levels.
• Tests are generally held on Saturday afternoons, outside of normal class times.
• The testing fee for under black belt is $30; each additional family member is half price.
