Forms

Guide to Kata (Forms)

Scoring
  • Forms are scored between 1 and 10 points
  • Competitors with the highest score wins
  • Competitors who tie will be asked to do their form again
  • The first competitor up will do their form again at the end
Awarding points
  • Competitors are judged on the four following principles. The more consistently these aspects are demonstrated, the higher the overall score.
  • Power – Strength of strikes and kicks, low stances
  • Precision – positioning the body correctly while moving through the form
  • Performance – intensity in the face, loud kiai, looking in the direction moving
  • Knowledge of the form – remembering all of the required moves

Syncronized Forms

This division is open to all ages and ranks. Two or more students get together to compete with a creative demo. It can be as simple as syncronizing one of their pinans or katas, or as complicated as choreographing their own moves complete with costumes and music. Groups will be judged on syncronization, effort, and creativity.

Weapons Competition

Any student who has trained in a weapon may compete in this division. Competitors will be judged on the same principles as in the kata divisions (power, precision, performance, and knowledge of the form). In addition, they will be judged on their ability to manipulate the weaopn correctly. Since this tournament is just our schools, students do NOT need to have completed their weapons form to participate!
